What is an NVQ?
An NVQ, or National Vocational Qualification, is a practical, work-based qualification which recognizes the skills, tools and knowledge a person needs to work in their chosen field. Individuals will be able to obtain this qualification after completing a series of in-depth training programmes which can be found on the CHL website here. There is no final examination, instead the candidate will be assessed on his/her ability to demonstrate and prove their competency in their chosen role. At the end of the NVQ, the student would also undergo two final practical assessments, during which an NVQ assessor will observe and ask questions.
NVQ’s are based on national occupational standards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with the aim of establishing a blanket set of skills and competencies that workers need to meet in order to operate at a high standard in the workplace.
Why is it important to have an NVQ?
Achieving a Construction NVQ Qualification is the first step in establishing a sustainable and successful career in the construction industry. Gaining higher qualifications will not only give you more practical experience and a broader understanding of your chosen field, but it is a vital educational component that is highly recognized across all construction employers. By having a Construction NVQ, you are ultimately showing that you have the tools and knowledge to deliver work to an exceptional standard, and you are serious about progressing in your career. It is also a mandatory requirement to have an NVQ Qualification if you are wanting to obtain a CSCS card – something that organizations hold in high regard.
Where can I obtain an NVQ?
NVQ courses are available to anyone whatever their age, although there are certain requirements such as you having to be employed or studying at college whilst doing a part-time job. Your NVQ course can be done in either an education or work setting, or as part of an apprenticeship at your company.
Depending on the subject, NVQs on the National Qualifications Framework are available from Level 1, which focuses on basic work activities, to Level 5 for senior management. The levels are broadly equivalent as follows:
- LEVEL 1 = 3-4 GCSEs at grades D-G
- LEVEL 2 = 4-5 GCSEs at grades A-C
- LEVEL 3 = 2 ‘A’ Levels
- LEVEL 4 = Higher Education Certificate / BTEC
- LEVEL 5 = Higher Education Diploma / Foundation
