With CSCS being the only universal standard of proof for construction site competency, gaining a CSCS card is an essential part of your construction career. This blog will specifically layout the process to gain a gold CSCS card, including the qualifications and tests needed to qualify.
- Pass CITB test
The first step in successfully gaining a gold CSCS card is to pass a CITB Health, Safety & Environment test. This test, governed by the Construction Industry Training Board, shows that you are aware of the health and safety regulations needed to work on a construction site. They come in the form of three types:
- CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Operatives
- CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Specialists
- CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test for Managers & Professionals (MAP test)
In order to pass, you must achieve a score of at least 45 out of the 50 questions within the 45-minute time frame. Those taking a MAP test require a minimum score of 46/50. It is important to note that you must have passed a CITB test within the last 2 years of your gold CSCS card application, otherwise you will have to re-take one.
- Complete construction NVQ
Once passing your CITB test, you must complete a construction related qualification in order to get your gold CSCS card. There are two types of gold CSCS cards: the gold CSCS supervisory card and the gold advanced craft card.
The gold CSCS supervisory card is available to individuals that achieve:
- A construction related supervisory/technical level 3/4 NVQ
- An occupational work supervision level 3 NVQ (including proof of endorsed occupation)
The gold CSCS advanced craft card is available if you have either:
- A construction related level 3 NVQ
- Completed an employer sponsored apprenticeship (including Guilds of London Institute Advanced Craft Certificate)

Once passing your CITB test and achieving your relevant construction NVQ, you will then be ready to gain your gold CSCS card. Once your application has been approved, your CSCS card should be posted in the next business day and should arrive within 3-5 working days. This card will hold a validity for 5 years.
