Umer Mansoor is fundraising for National Autistic Society

Umer Mansoor will be running the London Marathon for The National Autistic Society

At Construction Helpline, we are constantly invested in raising awareness for causes we are passionate about. That is why on the 3rd October, our very own Umer Mansoor will be taking on the 26-mile London Marathon to raise money for the National Autistic Society.

What is Autism?

Autism is a spectrum disorder that affects individuals in different ways. It is a lifelong developmental disability that affects the way people communicate and interact with the world, with initial signs being present as early as the ages of 2. The range of characteristics in autism is broad depending on severity, but common symptoms include repetitive and restrictive behaviours, extreme anxiety and sensitivity to light and sounds.

Although autism is labelled as a disability, it has not held back many amazing individuals from achieving greatness in their respective field’s. The likes of Albert Einstein, Susan Boyle and Sir Anthony Hopkins are just some examples of individuals who have lived with and overcome their conditions and still went onto to achieve incredible things.

What is the National Autistic Society?

The National Autistic Society is a charity founded in 1962 that is the UK’s leading charity for autistic people. The NAS align their mission, value and goals with autistic people and their families to help promote a society that operates with autistic people in mind. They hope that by achieving this, they can change the public perception of autism and advocate for more autism-friendly spaces, improve laws and deliver better services.

Why did Umer choose the National Autistic Society?

Construction Helpline CEO Umer Mansoor states:

“The National Autistic Society helps the 700,000 autistic people in the UK and their families. They achieve this by running specialist schools, campaigning for improved rights, or training companies on being more autism-friendly. The charity is dedicated to transforming lives and changing attitudes.

Covid-19 has really affected charities in terms of their funding and I want to use the London Marathon to raise £3,000 for the National Autistic Society. It isn’t a lot but hey, every little helps.”
